Isafjordur, Iceland – As the largest town in Iceland’s remote Westfjords region, Ísafjörður is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Akureyri, Iceland – Nestled along the shores of one of the most breathtaking fjords in Iceland, Akureyri is the nation’s second largest urban area and a center of Icelandic folk culture. Akureyri may be just 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle, but it has a surprisingly mild climate! Thanks to its sheltered location at the head of Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjörður, the area has been inhabited for centuries and eventually became one of northern Iceland’s most important trading centers.

Without a doubt, whale watching is one of the top attractions in Akureyri. The fjord is home to humpback and minke whales. If you’re lucky, you might also see some rarer species, including orcas or blue whales. And visitors commonly encounter other mammals, such as dolphins and porpoises, during tours.

Ålesund, Norway – In 1904, nearly the entire Norwegian town of Ålesund was destroyed by a devastating fire. Today, those historic buildings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking through Bryggen’s narrow wooden passageways gives visitors a glimpse into what this bustling trading port was like centuries ago.
