ITINERARY:
Day 1 – Welcome to West Virginia!
Your journey begins with a visit to Spruce Forest Artisan Village, a delightful collection of historic log cabins where local artisans create and sell hand-crafted pottery, woodwork, quilts, and glass art. Enjoy lunch on your own next door at Penn Alps Restaurant, known for its hearty Appalachian fare.
Continue to Charleston, West Virginia’s capital city, and settle in for a two-night stay at your centrally located hotel. This evening, share a relaxed welcome dinner with fellow travelers at a local favorite restaurant and get ready for the adventures ahead.
Day 2 – New River Gorge National Park & Appalachian Heritage
After breakfast, set out to explore one of America’s newest national parks — the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Visit the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, where sweeping overlooks showcase the iconic New River Gorge Bridge and the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.
Continue to Tamarack Marketplace, a stunning art and craft center celebrating West Virginia creativity. Browse the galleries, meet local artisans, and enjoy lunch on your own from their popular food court featuring Appalachian-inspired dishes.
This afternoon, descend into history with a guided tour of the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Ride an authentic mantrip underground and learn about the life of coal miners who helped fuel America’s industrial age. Return to Charleston for an included dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 3 – Rail Adventure & Arrival at The Greenbrier Resort
Following breakfast, board Amtrak’s Cardinal Train for one of the most scenic rail journeys in the eastern U.S. Sit back and relax as the train winds along the New River through dramatic canyons, forested slopes, and charming small towns.
Arrive in White Sulphur Springs, home to the world-renowned Greenbrier Resort. Before check-in, enjoy free time in the nearby town of Lewisburg, voted one of America’s best small towns, where boutique shops and cafés line the historic streets. Visit the North House Museum to discover the region’s frontier and Civil War history.
Later, check in at The Greenbrier, a five-star National Historic Landmark famous for its southern elegance, lush gardens, and storied past as “America’s Resort.” Enjoy dinner on your own this evening, with the option to dine on-site or return to Lewisburg for a local meal (transportation provided).
***Note: The Greenbrier Dress Code is more than a formality; it’s a time-honored tradition that sets the tone for an extraordinary experience and allows guests from all over the world to immerse themselves in the refinement and grace for which The Greenbrier is known.
Main Dining Room: Breakfast – Exercise attire is not permitted. Resort attire is required (collared sport shirts, sweaters, jackets, dress slacks, and walking shorts). If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours. Hats are not allowed to be worn, but bonnets are always in style for the ladies.
Dinner – Ladies and gentlemen in their finest. Jackets and collared shirts are required for men,
and dresses or evening suits for women. Men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted.
Day 4 – The Greenbrier Experience
Savor a leisurely breakfast before embarking on the Greenbrier Bunker Tour, a fascinating look inside the once top-secret Cold War fallout shelter built for Congress beneath the resort.
The remainder of the day is yours to relax and explore. Stroll through the manicured grounds, browse designer boutiques, or unwind in the grand public spaces designed by Dorothy Draper. Don’t miss Afternoon Tea in the Main Dining Room — a beloved Greenbrier tradition.
Guests of The Greenbrier can enjoy an evening at the resort’s beautiful Casino Club, offering slots, table games, and a relaxed lounge atmosphere with live entertainment. It’s a fun way to unwind after a day of sightseeing or exploring the resort. Attire in the Casino: The Greenbrier encourages resort-casual attire during the day and requires dressier attire after 7:00 PM.
Dinner tonight is on your own, with the option to dine on-site or return to Lewisburg for a local meal (transportation provided).
Day 5 – Homeward Bound After breakfast, bid farewell to the Greenbrier’s elegance and begin your journey home. Stop at the massive new Buc-ee’s travel center in Mt. Crawford, VA — a destination in itself — to stretch your legs and enjoy lunch on your own before continuing north. Return to your departure point with fond memories of rail travel, mountain beauty, and timeless hospitality.
