The Arlington House mansion was built by George Washington Parke Custis, the grandson of Martha Washington and step-grandson of George Washington, between 1802 and 1818. Robert E. Lee and his wife, Mary Custis, lived at Arlington House with their family for 30 years – from their marriage in 1831 until they fled at the start of the Civil War in April/May 1961. During the Civil War, the house and grounds were seized by the United States Army, who turned the plantation into a military cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery.
